We decided before creating a zine of our own to have a look at existing zines to get some ideas. As mentioned previously, we like the tone of voice of Vice, and how its unconventional and doesn't mind standing alone and focusing on the outsider. On a recent trip to Manchester for a different uni project (see, I know how to intermingle research from one project into another!) I picked up a number of local and national zines from various stores. One of these was Article. The theme for that particular issue was cities, and it's interesting to see how they have a feature on other zines, a photoshoot, and articles on "the North" and possibly forgotten cities.
Another zine picked up in Manchester was The Northern Boys Club. Sadly, this zine features an awful amount of football, but we liked it anyway (!) because the style of it is simple yet effective, and it has an old-fashioned look about it. As a result it has provided ideas for the layout of our own zine, and how we could incorporate a retro feel to it.
